Week 1 Update

Well, life got a bit hectic and I wasn’t able to blog every day so I’ll update you on how the first week went. I did fantastic with it until Saturday night…went out for date night and totally blew it for a meal! So I guess it’s not really technically a Whole30 anymore…more just like a really strict paleo diet. And guess what?! I’m okay with that! As long as I am continuing to make good choices then I am still making progress. I am not going to beat myself up over it. 🙂

Today is Tuesday so I guess it is Day 8. I haven’t seen much results on the scale to be honest, but that isn’t surprising due to my hypothyroid condition which makes it extremely hard to lose weight especially when my hormones are imbalanced. So…that is a little discouraging but all I can do is just keep going forward. I am way more label-conscious now and like the idea of finding alternatives to added sugar or processed food. I made my own mayonnaise (super easy!), ketchup, and cocktail sauce this week.

The biggest change from all of this is my outlook on food. They say most of our brains are addicted to sugar, and therefore addicted to food and eating. The point of all this and paleo in general is to really just reverse all that and put our bodies in a fat-burning mode instead of always sugar-burning. Once you are fat-burning, you desire to eat naturally decreases. You begin to only be hungry when you really need food. I am seeing this start to happen believe it or not. I have never been less interested in food as I am now. It’s really kind of a mental game though and if there weren’t so many bad influences around me I would be a lot better off. I did cave to a small slice of gooey cheesy pizza yesterday a co-worker brought me… but that is the ONLY bad thing I ate yesterday! Moderation is key. It’s not like I’m sitting down to an entire pan pizza to myself for dinner anymore. So I feel okay with small transgressions as long as I keep it in perspective.

Not doing so great on water but it’s still a goal of mine. 🙂 Let’s see how this week goes! (By the way…thank goodness for avocados & hard boiled eggs!)

Week 1 Update

Day Three

Well, I did a lot better on my water yesterday. I only had about an inch left in the jug at bedtime. Hoping to finally finish a gallon today. Not sure why I am finding it so difficult! I really didn’t think that would be a hard part of this challenge. The hard part for me has been not snacking, and staying awake from 1:30-3:30 to finish my work day. I usually would slam an energy drink to get through it but having water only has been rough. Did great on eating yesterday, wasn’t even that hungry for dinner. Only had grilled chicken, didn’t even cook the veggies (which probably isn’t good but oh well).

Food today…I packed a banana for breakfast. Still haven’t gotten up early enough to make a damn smoothie, even though I have all the stuff! Sigh. For snack I will have a hard boiled egg. For lunch I packed spinach salad with chicken and avocado again. I really like that by the way, and the Tessemae’s Italian dressing is my favorite so far. Dinner is unknown since I will be eating with Francis (partner) and he said he was going to cook. Excited for that!

Feeling good, staying on course. 🙂

Day Three

Day Two

I woke up feeling pretty good, actually. I went to bed at about 11 p.m. and would like to shoot for a little earlier tonight. 🙂 As for eating yesterday, I did really well. No problems, no desire to cheat so I am proud of myself. I did get a little hangry after I woke up from my nap at around 6, but after I cooked myself dinner I felt a lot better and satisfied. The only thing that needed work yesterday was water intake…I thought it would be easy! But no! I only made it 3/4 of the way through my gallon. I have prepared better today and packed a cup with a straw to go along with my gallon, which should make it easier.

Food is kind of up in the air today… ate a banana for breakfast. I’ll have 2 hard boiled eggs for my morning snack, upping this a little since breakfast was light. Then, salad for lunch again. Trying a different dressing today. Dinner not sure since I originally had planned on eating with my partner in this tonight, but that may not be happening now. I could go by Smith’s on the way home and grab a steak.

Overall, still very excited to see where this journey leads! I like challenging myself and this is definitely different than how I have ever eaten before.

So, apparently I picked the very worst day to begin this “lifestyle change” (trying not to say diet!). Turns out it’s Teacher Appreciation Week which means there will be delicious free lunch in the lounge all week + little gifts from my students have already started rolling in… The tally so far is two Reese’s cups and a Cold Stone gift card. At least the gift card can wait 30 days.

As for how I am feeling, I have to say I am very excited. I have been wanting to do something like this for ages…and now my health demands it more than ever. I did take some “before” photos this morning but those will never be revealed until a better “after” can counter them! 😉 It is nice to have a partner in doing this, and will make it much more manageable.

I know this blog is titled “Jess Goes Paleo” because that is the intent long term. However, I will mention that I am starting with a very strict and specific type of paleo diet for these first 30 days: Whole30. Nothing processed, no sugars, no dairy, no grains, no cheating…you get the point. Brutal!

Food for today! So far I have eaten some egg/veggie cups I had baked a few days ago as well as a banana. Mid-morning snack was supposed to be an apple which I forgot to bring, so will substitute 2 hard boiled eggs I brought instead. Lunch will be a mixed greens salad with compliant dressing, avocado, tomato, and some queen olives. An afternoon snack would be a tomato sliced up with salt, if need be…and for dinner, I have some thin grass-fed pork chops I will grill, along with grilled mushrooms and green beans. Sounds pretty good to me! This is why I don’t say “diet”!

Along with eating healthier, my goal is to drink a gallon of water every day. I am doing pretty well with this so far! I don’t think that will be too much of a problem. So hot here!
